On reading Vasyl Stus and about him
He wanted to improve the world... He managed little.
He gained imprisonment, he knew suffering there.
The works that he wrote were condemned, too.
It was proclaimed that one should abstain from reading them.
He wrote, he translated and quarrelled with God,
quarrelled to find Him within himself.
He was not to laugh at when fighting,
but what he wanted was to say more.
He was devoted to his wife and son,
but he did not preserve his freeedom for them.
He remained a love and a hero for them
and they were preserving what he was writing.
He can annoy when he uses the words of dialect,
because their meaning may be not clear to the reader.
But the good purpose is seen here:
he wants to preserve something that is rare.
He still managed to improve the world, ar list a little.
for he is read widely, and those who read him
know by the play of colours in his verses
that the man managed to withstand the trouble.
