Г.С. My  English  translation

My  English  translation:

H.S.Skovoroda

Know  that  each  city  has  its  way  and  rights,
And  every  head  always  thinks  as  it  tries.
Every  heart  chooses  what  love  to  embrace,
And  every  throat  enjoys  the  proper  taste.
The  only  thought  is  my  treasure,  indeed
The  only  thought  bothers  my  troubled  wit.

Pyotr  wants  an  ofice,  he  flatters  and  fights.
Fedka's  the  merchant,  he  sells  and  he  lies.
This  one  desires  a  new  style  for  his  house.
That  one  thinks  of  credits,  he  constantly  does.
The  only  thought  is  my  treasure,  indeed
The  only  thought  bothers  my  troubled  wit.

This  one  acquires  more  and  more  land,
That  one  acquires  more  and  more  foreign  cattle.
These  hunt  with  dogs  that  they  like  and  possess.
Those  keep  a  house  filled  with  hungry  guests.
The  only  thought  is  my  treasure,  indeed
The  only  thought  bothers  my  troubled  wit.

A  lawyer  has  deals  with  all  kinds  of  rights.
A  student  is  at  disputes,  and  almost  dies.
Those  fall  for  Cupid  of  Venus's  rule.
Everyone's  head  is  possessed  with  his  fool.
The  only  thought  is  my  treasure,  indeed
that  when  I  die  I  won't  be  without  wit.

One  wrote  a  praise  though  it's  clear  that  he  lied.
A  doctor  says  'Healhy'  of  a  patient  that  has  died.
One  imitates  those  who  don't  know  any  care.
Styopka  runs  to  the  court  as  if  he  would  marry  there.

You,  death,  you,  scythe,  you  kill,  you  don't  spare.
You  have  no  mercy  even  for  a  king's  hair.
You  see  no  difference  between  peasants  and  kings.
You're  just  a  merciless  fire  that  kills.

So,  who  may  spit  on  this  frightening  steel?
The  one  whose  conscience  is  all  crystal  clear.
